Types of Workstation Crane
Freestanding Met-Track Workstation Cranes
Freestanding Met-Track systems are supported by their own steel columns and baseplates, transferring all loads directly into the floor slab or foundation.
Key characteristics:
- Independent of the building structure
- Supported by columns anchored to concrete foundations
- Can be installed in facilities not designed for overhead loads
- Ideal for retrofits, leased buildings, or future reconfiguration
Benefits:
- No reliance on roof or ceiling structures
- Predictable structural performance
- Flexible layouts and modular expansion
- Minimal coordination with existing building steel
- Requires 6” of reinforced concrete
Freestanding systems are commonly used where ceiling height is sufficient and where building structures cannot support suspended crane loads.
Ceiling-Mounted Met-Track Workstation Cranes
Ceiling-mounted Met-Track systems are suspended from the building’s roof structure, joists, or beams using engineered hanger assemblies.
Key characteristics:
- Loads are transferred into the building structure
- Requires adequate roof or beam capacity
- Maximizes floor space and improves workflow
- Lower visual and physical footprint
Benefits:
- Clear floor area with no columns
- Improved access around workstations
- Ideal for tight layouts or high-traffic production areas
- Clean, streamlined installation
Ceiling-mounted systems must be reviewed and approved by a qualified structural engineer to ensure the building can safely support the applied crane loads.
